Fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) are prebiotics produced through enzymatic conversion of fructose found in fruits and vegetables like chicory, sugar cane, artichoke.
scFOS is a short-chain FOS derived from sugar cane that has clinically proven benefits on gut microbiota, critical inflammatory markers and lipemia markers. It’s a dietary fiber with low caloric value that has excellent body tolerance compared to alternative sources, good sweetness, and can promote calcium absorption in both animal and human guts.
scFOS does not get digested by human enzymes. It selectively promotes the growth of good bacteria in the gut making it an excellent prebiotic. As scFOS does not cause gastrointestinal upset (unlike alternative sources) and can be used at high dosages (even up to 20grams per day).
FOS use is generally restricted in baby formula, however commonly used in follow-on and growing up formulations. FOS can be used unrestricted in food and beverage products for its prebiotic, fiber and sweetening functions.
